Calipari notes from SEC teleconference

Notes from John Calipari’s time on the SEC teleconference:

  • He starts off by saying that “this team will be young again.” Glad we’re already hearing that. He does note, however, that this team “should be — and I’m saying should be — deeper than last year’s, when we used six players.”
  • On his new contract extension and how that affects how he might look at other offers in the future, Calipari talked about having buyouts and things of that nature, before saying “I’m excited about being (at UK). I waited a long time to get to a place like Kentucky.”
  • Talking about the new one-league format of the SEC, Calipari said it was a good move because it eliminates the “one division strong, one division weak” aspect that crops up around Selection time. He said 22 conference games would be hard to do, but that non-conference scheduling and success mattered more anyway.
  • Calipari again talked about how he wasn’t going to be coaching into “his 70s.” He’s always said 60s before.
  • His time on the phone ended rather abruptly, when a question was asked and there was only silence on the other end. The SEC moved along to Cuonzo Martin.
