Bicyclist struck near corner of Rose and Euclid

An accident involving a bicyclist and a truck occurred near the Papa John’s and Qdoba parking lot Wednesday afternoon on Avenue of Champions.

UK Police Chief Joe Monroe said the student was traveling in the bike lane on Avenue of Champions when a Dodge pickup truck made a left turn into the parking lot and struck the bicyclist. The student was headed westbound while the truck was traveling eastbound.

Kayla Phelps, the Kernel’s assistant news editor, was crossing Rose Street to go to Coffea when she witnessed the accident.

“I was terrified. His face was covered in blood,” she said.

The identity of the student has yet to be released, but Monroe said his injuries were significant enough that he was taken to the hospital.

The accident happened between 1:15 and 1:30 p.m., Phelps said. She said she ran over and noticed someone was on the phone with the police, and shortly after the police and paramedics came.

“I couldn’t watch. I was uncomfortable seeing someone in so much pain,” Phelps said.

The area was blocked off for less than an hour, Phelps said, and a few people gathered around the scene.

Though she wasn’t sure who was in the truck, she said the passenger(s) stayed at the scene.

The Kernel put in an open records request for the police report Wednesday evening. That information has not yet been received.
