In just two hours, students can become master artists and possess the ability to paint with the likes of Van Gogh. Each attendee of Create Your Own Masterpiece will walk away from Rasdall Gallery with his or her own version of Starry Night Thursday evening as K Week cruises on.

Create Your Own Masterpiece, a painting class where an instructor will provide participants with step-by-step instructions on how to paint one of the most revered pieces of art of all time, will be presented by local company Painting With a Twist.

“An instructor will come in and provide the paint and canvasses,” said Sabrina Hounshell, Vice President of promotions for SAB. “Everyone will be painting the same work of art, but each will come out differently.”

Painting With a Twist, a national franchise, provides “art as entertainment,” said Lexington store manager Rachael Mansfield.

“People can visit the Lexington store to attend the two to three hour art classes, or an instructor can be sent out,” she said. “No experience is necessary. We do mom’s clubs, sorority parties…”

The two-hour class will take place in the Student Center Thursday, , is normally $35, but SAB is presenting the experience to UK students for free.

“I went to school for art at UK, and this venue fits perfectly,” Mansfield said. It’s a great way to kick off the semester for new students. It’s great for people who haven’t met before.”

Hounshell said students should come out because Create Your Own Masterpiece will be a really unique event, and not the kind of thing normally offered as entertainment on a college campus.

“Especially if you aren’t already artistic… you can come and experience painting and walk away with something and say, ‘Yeah, I did that,’” Hounshell said.

Mansfield said she hopes this first-time event, which she describes as a great alternative to dinner or going to the movies, will translate into a long-term tradition with UK and K Week.

“Everyone leaves with something; you’ll remember it forever,” she said. “And you can use it to impress friends later.”

To participate in Create Your Own Masterpiece, students must email [email protected] before the event begins at 6 p.m. The first 50 to sign up will experience the life.
