The UK Homecoming 2012 traditions won’t stop at the football game and the crowning of king and queen.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council will add to the excitement Oct. 19 at 7 p.m with its annual Homecoming Step Show.

The step show is a major part of the events for UK’s Homecoming, especially in the African-American community at UK.

Ashley Jones, a social work junior, has attended the step show for the past three years.

“It’s like a red carpet award show. People plan their outfits ahead of time and want to see what other people are wearing. It’s always a big thing every year,” Jones said.

There is a lot of work that goes into preparing for the step show.

Sheryl Miles, a social work junior and member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., one of the seven sororities and fraternities participating in the step show, said, “It’s a big change coming from just watching last year’s show and now participating in it this year. I finally understand all the hard work that goes into the planning and execution of the show.”

Seven of the nine active NPHC organizations present on UK’s campus have been planning and practicing since the early summer months for the event. Last year’s Homecoming Step Show brought in more than 1,700 attendees.

This year the show will be at the Lexington Convention Center in Heritage Hall.

Tierra Harper, a communications senior, is in charge of the event.

“The step show used to be at Memorial Hall, then moved to Memorial Coliseum because we had to accommodate the large number of the attendees,” Harper said. “This year we moved to Heritage Hall because there is a volleyball game scheduled for that night.”

The National Pan-Hellenic Council invites all students, as well as the public, to attend.

Tickets are on sale now for $15 in advance and will be available the day of for $20. They are available for purchase daily in 575 Patterson Office Tower from 3 to 5 p.m.

A portion of the proceeds will go to DanceBlue.
