Fall brings Keeneland season

The beginning of October brings some unpleasant changes. The cold weather of winter is beginning to descend, and the first round of exams is well underway.

Still, all is not lost.

As the leaves begin to turn color, it means we can finally enjoy the final turn at Keeneland.

Truly one of the finest traditions that Lexington has to offer, the Keeneland Fall Meet is an exciting time.

Every year thousands of students spend their weekends embracing a Kentucky past time. Like other sporting events, Keeneland has the power to bring people together, displaying the sense of community that sets this university apart.

Keeneland is also a symbol of Kentucky, not just here but around the world.

Along with bourbon and KFC, horses help brand the state globally.

While Keeneland occupies a prime position in the lucrative horse racing and auction market, it ia actually a nonprofit entity. They have worked hard to advance the thoroughbred industry and build up the local community.

As part of their involvement in Lexington, Keeneland has consistently supported UK students.

The college scholarship days give out thousands of dollars worth of scholarships to area college students twice a year. They have also been generous in their donations to DanceBlue and other UK philanthropy initiatives.

On Oct. 11, they are holding a See Blue Day.

UK students, alumni and faculty will receive free admission, and a UK versus Alabama Handicapping Challenge will directly benefit DanceBlue and UADM, a dance marathon at the University of Alabama.

At the end of the day, the reason I love Keeneland is the feeling I get when I am spending the afternoon with my best friends, enjoying the early autumn sun and betting on a winner.

So get out there this weekend (after your classes) and enjoy the experience.
