Borrowed from the Boys

Women’s fashion is a game of change. Constantly evolving, it comes as no surprise that women are now starting to sift through their boyfriends’ closets for inspiration. Similar to vintage shopping, there’s just something about clothing with a history that can be just as exciting as a brand-new piece. Bow ties, tuxedo jackets and loafers are easy to feminize without totally screaming “walk of shame.”

The only rule is to be unapologetically you.

Bow Ties

Step out of the fashion box with a bow tie! Start by borrowing one if you are not sure if you love the look. After trying it out for a while, look for a bow tie that fits your personal style and compliments your wardrobe. Style these bow ties with classic button-down shirts, as they were originally intended to be worn. From there, add your own twist.  Make it more feminine with a pencil skirt, or keep it cool with a pair of boyfriend jeans. Add a flat collar necklace under the bow tie to make it pop. This allows you to play with pattern mixing without overwhelming the outfit as a whole. Keep the look simple by sticking to black and white, or go bold and play with a color palette of your choice. Try a pocket square, too! Don’t have a pocket to put it in? Tie the square around your purse handle as an additional accessory.

Tuxedo Jackets

Think dresses are the only formal attire options? Well, think again! You can look just as sexy in a pair of skinny dress pants and a tuxedo jacket as you do in a cocktail dress. Don’t be afraid to make a statement.

Vests

Vests are back! Wear these with jeans, dresses or skirts. You can also channel the menswear look with a tie and add a fun pair of heels to dress up the outfit.

Shoes

Guys are not the only ones who can sport comfortable and fashionable shoes! Loafers are an easy transition piece to bring your closet from summer to fall. Another great pair of shoes, which were originally intended for basketball players, are Chuck Taylors. This most recent comeback was meant as a replacement for designer heels on the runway, and now, they are an easy throw-on for everything from class to a day at Keeneland.

Boyfriend Jeans

Boyfriend jeans are a girl’s best friend. There are only so many times that baggy, comfortable pants are in style, so take every opportunity you can get! Whether it’s a dark wash with holes, or a straight stone wash, you can’t go wrong. Dress these up with high heels and a blazer; keep it casual with Chucks and a boyfriend tee. These pants will be your go-to for every day of the week.
