The Lexington Herald-Leader reported Tuesday morning that Lexington Mayor Jim Gray will run against U.S. Sen. Rand Paul.

Gray, a Democrat, told the Herald-Leader that he thinks he can beat Paul, who is also running for President.

The race will likely be a difficult one for Gray, who is the first gay mayor in Kentucky. President Barack Obama has a low approval rate in the state, and Gray will have to separate himself from President Obama to gain support.

Former political reporter for the Louisville Courier-Journal Al Cross told the Kentucky Kernel that Gray’s sexuality may not be a huge factor in the race. People who would not vote for Gray because he is gay would likely not have voted for him anyway, Cross said.
