UK suspends Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity for breaking hazing policy
April 26, 2016
After an investigation by the Office of Student Conduct, Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity agreed to a 5-year suspension from UK for breaking the university’s hazing policy.
A complaint filed in late March said that during the fall 2015 and spring 2016 semesters members of the fraternity forced students to participate in “alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, humiliation, calisthenics and various other activities,” wrote Nicholas Kehrwald, associate dean of Students for Student Conduct, in an email to the Kernel.
The fraternity could not be reached for comment, but Kehrwald said that the chapter was cooperative in the investigation, accepted their responsibility for their behavior and agreed to the suspension effective immediately.
Kentucky does not have a statute against hazing, and no one was harmed, so the fraternity will be facing no legal consequences or fines.
