Students can participate in local breast cancer awareness walk
October 18, 2016
UK students will have a chance to dress up in pink and fight breast cancer at the seventh annual Making Strides of Fayette Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Oct. 23.
According to Heather Shaw, the community manager for the American Cancer Society, over 80 teams and over 400 individuals have already registered, but the organization is expecting over 2,000 individuals by the day of the walk. Shaw also said that the American Cancer Society would like to raise $150,000, last year the walked raised $110,000.
Making Strides of Fayette not only benefits breast cancer research, but also the Hope Lodge, which is on UK’s campus. The Hope Lodge gives those who are fighting cancer a place to stay when they are receiving medical treatment in Lexington. Breast cancer is one of the major reasons for patients to stay at the Hope Lodge.
The walk will take place at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and the walk will begin at 3 p.m. Registration for the walk is free, but donations are accepted. All ages are accepted to join the walk, but pets will not be permitted. Participants that donate $12 or more will receive a UK Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirt.
Students can participate in several other events this week to benefit Breast Cancer Awareness such as:
- A Bowl-A-Thon on Oct. 18 at 10 p.m at Collins Bowling Alley on Southland Drive
- Pink Zumba on Oct. 19 at the Johnson Center
- A pink tailgate on Oct. 22 for the Mississippi State football game hosted by the American Cancer Society
Students are able to sign up for the walk online.
