The pros and cons of self-driving cars
November 23, 2016
The city of Boston announced in October that they would test self-driving cars by the end of the year.
While some – particularly frequent pedestrians and cyclists – are concerned about the safety of self-driving cars, tech analysts think that self-driving cars are the way of the future.
One student, in an article published by USA Today College, believes that no matter how good a driver a person is, a computer is always better. But since self-driving cars are still in early development, the safety factor is yet to be determined. Even in these early stages, though, self-driving cars are expected to eliminate problems with distracted driving and cell phone usage.
The potential partnerships between self-driving cars, public transit, and ride-sharing services could also revolutionize street transportation – and even eliminate the need to own a car. Especially for college students or people who travel frequently, self-driving cars at the click of a button could offer a far more convenient way to commute.
As for the legal ramifications, laws will have to catch up to determine what to do about accidents involving self-driving cars, as well as potential hackers that could interfere with their programming.
The vehicles will also cost a significant amount once they go commercial, but with further development they will eventually become the norm.
