A Weekend in Southern Jordan
February 13, 2017
Amman is a popular study abroad destination for college students, but if you’re visiting Jordan, don’t limit yourself to the city! Jordan is full of beautiful landscapes you definitely should not miss out on. If you’re feeling energetic, you can see all the highlights of southern Jordan in just two nights and three days.
Petra
Take a JETT bus for about 15 dollars from Amman to this unforgettable archeological site that you will probably recognize from Indiana Jones. Most images you’ve seen of Petra are of the imposing monasteries carved into the rocks, but what I found more incredible were the natural formations and passages.
The hike through Petra is equal parts awe-inspiring and exhausting. Make sure that your backpack is packed with water, snacks, and sunscreen. Allot six hours to be able to hike to the monastery and back without rushing.
Aqaba
After you’ve sweat through your clothes walking through Petra, take a hired car from Petra to Aqaba and its beaches about two hours away. When you get to your hotel in Aqaba, change into your swimsuit and go for a swim! In downtown Aqaba, you can opt for public or private beaches, or you can go a little farther out to Tala Bay’s private beaches.
The Red Sea is the bluest water you will ever see. Rent out some snorkeling equipment and check out the abundant lion fish in the area (but don’t touch them!). Some companies will take you on guided snorkeling tours and a short boat ride, taking you to the spots where you can see the coastlines of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Israel all at once.
Though it may be tempting to stay in the tourist resort areas, spend your one evening in Aqaba walking in the downtown area and get dinner. It’s a pretty and very walkable city.
Wadi Rum
Just once you’ve gotten comfortable in Aqaba’s humidity, it’s time to move onto the desert of Wadi Rum, under an hour away. Make reservations at a bedouin camp and enjoy a night under the stars.
It’ll be colder than you expect, so bring warm pajamas! Wake up early the next morning to watch the sunrise over the rock formations.
Then take a tour through the natural reserve. Most campsites provide tours, but check your arrangements before you go there! Again, bring water, snacks, and sunscreen so you can enjoy the breathtaking sights without getting hangry or sunburned.
