Although walking around Dubai Mall pretending to be an heiress and trying on Oscar de la Renta dresses is the definition of fun, there is more to the Emirati culture. If you visit the United Arab Emirates, you should get a taste of it. Here is six things to do in Dubai and Abu Dhabi besides go to the mall.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

These pictures speak for themselves. This stunning mosque in Abu Dhabi was built in 2007 and displays influences from both the Arabian Peninsula and South Asia, which is just across the Persian Gulf from the Emirates. Make sure to dress conservatively in long sleeves, high collared shirts, long loose pants or skirts, and a hair covering for women. Wear shoes that come off easily, as wearing shoes in a mosque is generally prohibited. Admission is free.

Zabeel Park

You thought Dubai was all desert? Zabeel Park is a green oasis in the city, which hosts a farmers’ market every Friday called Ripe Market. It is also the home of several buildings that were gifted to the city by Japan. These buildings are all in traditional Japanese styles and are a welcome contrast from the modern architectural styles of the city.

Beach at the JBR

Dubai’s beach, particularly “Beach at the JBR” is a major hangout spot for twenty-somethings at night. It’s rare to see anyone swimming, but there are cafes and food stalls stationed all over. On some nights, there’s even an artists’ market called “The Market.” I would recommend taking a look at the stands of perfume and Arabic calligraphy.

Dubai Marina

Dubai is best known for its incredible architecture, but less appreciated for its engineering accomplishments. Dubai Marina is an artificial creation lined with restaurants, boats, and insane architecture. One building on the marina is twisted. TWISTED. It’s called Cayan Tower. Google it; you won’t be disappointed.

Dubai Museum

This is a cultural museum located in a fort that was built in the 1700s, making it the oldest building in the city. Take some time here to learn about Emirati art and history.

Food

Dubai is a great food city. I am Syrian, and some of my favorite Syrian food I’ve ever had was at Sarouja Restaurant, near Dubai Marina. For Emirati food, the best place in town is Al-Tawasol Restaurant. There are IHOPs and Tim Horton’s all over the place in the UAE, but AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS. Arab food is great, so take advantage of the plethora.

If you’re in a foreign country, there is no reason to only go to a shiny mall with American brands. Emirati culture is rich, and hopefully these six suggestions will give you a place to start.
