In a not-so-shocking turn of events, smoking weed can have a negative impact on your grades. The legalization of marijuana in several states – and the growing $6.7 billion industry – has increased the use of weed among college students by eight percent, and in turn affected their grades.
A study at Yale University found that students who drink and smoke heavily were likely to get lower grades. Who would’ve thought? But the reason why marijuana is negatively connected with academic performance is more significant.
Skipping class is the biggest connecting factor. The more students smoke weed, the more likely they are to skip class, which leads to a lower GPA. Other effects include impaired memory and difficulty with problem-solving, but the effects are so subtle that students, especially those who smoke daily, hardly notice that marijuana is to blame.
