UK volleyball sweeps conference opponent LSU at home
September 24, 2017
UK continued SEC conference play Sunday with a 3-0 sweep over the LSU Tigers (25-22, 25-16, 25-13).
Today as a collective unit, this team was able to showcase their versatile options on their offense set.
It all started with an ace from Madison Lilley, and that set the tone for the Cats for the rest of the match.
The Cats gained an early lead over the Tigers, however the Tigers proved they were not going to be easily defeated as they tied the match at 15-15 during the first set.
Kaz Brown answered back as she had 5 kills on 6 swings in the first set.
UK posted 17 kills in the first set from five different players. Setter Madison Lilley had multiple options on her passes and she was able to get the ball to the right players and the hitters did the rest which led to big points for Kentucky.
In today’s match, a key point for Kentucky was the ability to score the ball in different areas on the floor. Different players were able to get a lot of one-on-one plays against the Tigers front line.
“We can score from almost anywhere on the floor, and I think that’s something teams are going to have a hard time trying to defend,” said Brown.
This balance of sharing the ball and getting all of the players involved in the match was established in the first set and maintained in the second set as Kentucky got off to another lead against the Tigers.
In the second set the Cats were able to hit some hard balls to the Tigers, and Lilley was a contributing factor to this as she set the ball right where the hitters wanted it.
“Having so many different options, it gives us a lot of room to hit hard and get single people up,” said Darian Mack.
This strategy by UK was a confusing one for the Tigers, because it was difficult to stop just one player on these one-on-one plays.
This UK team played excellent team volleyball. They were able to get different players in the air to finish big at the net, and together they could not be taken down.
This impressive performance as a collective unit worked well for the Cats as they swept the Tigers and they are now riding a four-match winning streak.
The win for Kentucky improved their overall record to 9-2. They are 2-0 in conference play, and this loss dropped LSU’s record to 9-3.
The cats have six days off until their next match on Oct. 1. The Cats will travel to Mississippi State and take on the bulldogs at 3 p.m.
