UK, LFUCG hosting Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration

UK is partnering with the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government to host a celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday. 

There will be several events throughout the day on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, all of which will be free and open to the public.

“The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Planning Committee highly encourage the community to participate in these scheduled events, and to become involved in activities that commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” said UK’s website on a page about the holiday. 

First, the Freedom March will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will leave from the Lexington Center Heritage Hall on West Main Street. Line up begins at 9 a.m. More information about participating or making a donation can be found here

Then, the Commemorative Holiday Program will begin in 11:00 a.m. in Heritage Hall. The program’s theme is “Dr. King’s Vision in an Age of Betrayal,” and the guest presenter will be Tim Wise, an American anti-racism activist and writer. 

After the program, the Kentucky Theater will be offering a free showing of “Hidden Figures” at 2:00 p.m.
