Blood donations, donut sales kick off week focused on women’s heart health
February 12, 2018
The Alpha Phi sorority kicked off its week-long philanthropy dedicated to women’s heart health with a blood drive and coffee and donut sale on Monday.
Taylor McDaniels, the philanthropy chair for Alpha Phi, said all proceeds from the coffee, hot chocolate and donut sale went directly to the Alpha Phi fund—a fund dedicated mainly to women’s heart health.
Monday’s event garnered $1,146 for the fund, said Vice President of Community Relations Emilie Moorman.
Moorman said the sorority chose to do a blood drive because it’s “such a big part of cardiac healthcare.”
“I really think that this really shows that women’s heart health affects each and every one of us in some way,” Moorman said. “I just feel like donating blood is a really helpful way to kind of give back not just in our the sorority but our campus as a whole.”
Several students, including pre-pharmacy freshman Cedric Amaniapong, came out to participate in the blood drive.
“I came out to donate because there’s a lot of people out there that need blood in general and I felt the need the to help and donate,” Amaniapong said while preparing to give blood.
Amanipong added that helping others in need is something that’s “important in life.”
The blood drive is the first day of a week-long philanthropy event called Heart Throb Week. Alpha Phi hosts Heart Throb Week to raise money and awareness for women’s heart health.
“Some people don’t know what sororities do and I think this is a really good way to show how important Women’s Heart health is to us,” Moorman said.
