The UK Disability Resource Center is accepting nominations for the Carol S. Adelstein Award.

Eligible students must show distinction in academic achievement, leadership, extracurricular activities and social or personal qualities, according to David T. Beach, the Director of the Disability Resource Center. Nominees can be full or part-time students.

“Students must have a disability who best serve as an example of excellence to the University of Kentucky community,” Beach said.

Winners are given a scholarship award, the worth of which depends on the fund balance.

“Their achievements illustrate how an inclusive community can support persons with disabilities in achieving great things,” Beach said.

The award was established by Dr. Michael Adelstein, a former UK faculty member. It was created to honor his wife, Carol Adelstein, who was in a wheelchair due to polio. Ms. Adelstein maintained a career and a life as a mother and wife all while facing the inaccessibility for people with disabilities, according to Beach.

The award was first given in 1981. Nicole Argo and Stuart Ford were last year’s winners.

Nominations can be sent to Beach, emailed to [email protected] or mailed. The deadline is March 20, 2018.
