4-year-old struck by car on Saturday has passed away

The 4-year-old who was struck by a car on Saturday on Cooper Drive has passed away of his injuries, UK announced on Monday evening.

His name, released for the first time, is Marco Lee Shemwell. The announcement said he died on Monday afternoon at Kentucky Children’s Hospital.

An 18-year-old UK student, Jacob Heil, was arrested Saturday after being identified as the driver of the silver car that struck Shemwell. At the time of his arrest, Heil showed “signs of impairment” during field sobriety tests.

“The family asks for their privacy at this time,” the announcement read.

UK Police is still investigating the accident and asks that anyone who witnessed the incident call (859) 258-3600.
