The UK men’s golf team remains in contention, while the women’s team improved drastically to move up the leaderboard in round two of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational.

The men’s squad followed up an even-par performance in round one with a 289 (1-over-par) score, leaving the Wildcats with a combined two-round score of 577.

The story of the day for the men was without a doubt Alex Goff.

Goff, the sophomore out of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, tallied a 65 (7-under-par) in round two, breaking the record for individual score in one round at Blessings Golf Club in tournament competition. Goff’s card leaves him in sole possession of first place for the tournament at 10-under-par.

“It was a pleasure watching Alex play today,” UK head coach Brian Craig said. “He was so absorbed in the moment and played very smart golf all the way around this great course.”

It was the back half of Goff’s round that really separated him from the pack and kept his team in contention going into tomorrow’s final round. Goff birdied six of his last nine holes, including four in a row from holes 2-5 (UK began the round on the back nine.)

“Everything was clicking, and I got hot on our back nine,” Goff said. “But there’s still 18 holes of golf to play… I just need to keep doing what I’m doing and everything will take care of itself.”

Jacob Cook again wasn’t too far behind Goff’s pace, as he finished the round with a 69 (3-under-par), a career-best score. Cook’s big round brings him to 1-under par for the tournament, which is tied for eleventh in individual score.

The Wildcats will begin tomorrow’s final round in third place, just four strokes behind new leader Alabama, who sits at 3-under-par after firing a 282 (6-under-par) today.

The women’s team made serious improvements in round two, following a 316 (28-over-par) first round with a 290 (2-over-par) today, a 26-stroke improvement. The score was the third best out of the 14 teams in the round.

“Our team looked more like themselves… they were disciplined, created more opportunities and stayed committed to their swings,” Kentucky head coach Golda Borst said. “They each played their own games today and didn’t let the course beat them up… there are a ton of positives to build on for tomorrow and we look forward to getting back on the course in the morning.”

Laney Frye was the story for the Cats on Monday, but her teammates stepped up on Tuesday

Marissa Wenzler led the team with a 70 (2-under-par,). The sophomore out of Centerville, Ohio’s score was a nine-stroke improvement her first round.

Senior Rikke Svejgård Nielsen and fellow sophomore Jensen Castle both shot an even-par 72, improving 13 and nine strokes respectively from their first-day totals.

The second-round performance was good enough to push UK four spots up the leaderboard and into eighth. The Cats sit 30 strokes back of the leader Arkansas heading into the final round.

The men will look to capture the Blessings Collegiate Invitational title tomorrow, as they will tee off at approximately 11:36 a.m. E.T. The women will have their final chance to make a run at finishing near front of the pack when they tee off around 7:54 a.m. E.T.
