Kentucky STUNT fell for the first time this season. The team now stands at 19-1 on the season following a doubleheader in California and The Joust this past week.
The Wildcats’ doubleheader was versus Vanguard and Concordia Irvine on Wednesday, March 12, where they prevailed 24-6 and 21-7, respectively.
Kentucky started its Vanguard victory by claiming the first point of partner stunts, followed by the teams tying on the next two routines. The Cats ultimately capped the first quarter by winning the final point of the period.
In the second quarter, pyramids and tosses, the teams tied on the first routine, and rounded out with a Kentucky sweep of the final three points of the period.
The second half had the jumps and tumbling quarter following the same pattern as the first quarter, where Kentucky took a 12-5 lead. In the final quarter, Kentucky earned all 12 points compared to Vanguard’s singular point to seal the win.
With their match against Concordia, the Cats started strong by taking the first point of the first quarter, however quickly fell to Eagles 3-1 by the end of the period.
Kentucky jumped back, however, where it won all four points in the second to have a 5-3 lead into the half.
The Wildcats took three points in the third quarter, alongside a tie in the third routine of the period, and ultimately won 12 points in the final quarter compared to Concordia’s three to take the victory.
Following the doubleheader, Kentucky STUNT was at a 16-0 start to the season –- the best start in school history as well as the longest winning streak in the history of the program.
During the first day of The Joust, the Wildcats swept their pair of games at California Baptist, where they topped Arizona Christian 12-0 in an eight-round game, followed by a 20-11 victory over William Jessup.
The pair of wins extended the Cats’ historic record to 18-0 on the season.
Game one’s eight-round format followed the regular procession of a normal game, only with half of the events.
Kentucky took all four points collectively in the first half to go into the half with a 4-0 lead.
The second half mirrored the first, where Kentucky swept the Firestorm to take both points in the third and all six points in the final quarter to complete the shutout.
Game two followed a regular game format, where the teams split the first two points of the first quarter and Kentucky took the final two routines, giving the Cats a 3-1 lead. The Cats rounded out the half with a 6-4 lead.
The third quarter saw the teams tie the first routine, Kentucky taking two routines and William Jessup taking one to extend the lead to 9-6 for the Cats.
Game two rounded out with Kentucky earning 11 points and Jessup earning just five.
Kentucky continued day two of The Joust with a 24-2 victory over Arizona State.
The championships saw the Cats facing four-time defending national champion California Baptist, where Kentucky fell for the first time this season 21-5.
In the final game of the tournament, the Wildcats fell early, where they didn’t claim a single point in the first quarter, and only claimed one in the second quarter, giving the Lancers an 8-1 lead into the half.
The teams tied the first routine of the third before the Lancers won the final three points, and the game was rounded out with California Baptist earning nine points compared to Kentucky’s three.
Kentucky sophomore Isabella Doria was named to the first team All-Tournament team, and fellow sophomore Isabella Franzella was named to the second team.
The Cats ended The Joust as runner-ups in the tournament.
Kentucky STUNT will return to action on Saturday, March 22, with a doubleheader matchup versus Hiram and Mercyhurst in Erie, Pennsylvania.
