The Frederick Douglass Broncos defeated the Scott County Cardinals 105-74 on Friday evening in Georgetown.
Frederick Douglass came into this game 18-2 with losses to Great Crossing and St. Xavier. Scott County’s record this season is 5-16.
The first time these two teams met this season was on Dec. 14 in the Billy Hicks Classic at Scott County Middle School. Frederick Douglass won 95-67.
Both teams played a very fast style of basketball. The Broncos were led by Aveion Chenault, Jaunte Jenkins and DeMarcus Surratt, who are all three very versatile athletes being able to shoot from behind the arc as well as effectively driving to the basket. The three of them had 43 points combined.
The Cardinals were led by Colton Helton, Montae Washburn and Tristan Christopher. They compiled 52 of Scott County’s 74 points. Helton had a big night for the Cardinals with 25 points.
The first quarter was close with both teams coming out ready to play. It wasn’t until the four minute mark that Frederick Douglass pulled away with the help of Jenkins’ six straight points. The score at the end of the first quarter was 31-23, Frederick Douglass.
To start the second quarter, Frederick Douglass’ Chenault came out with a powerful dunk to extend the Broncos’ lead to ten. He went on to have an impressive quarter.
The halftime score was 60-36, Douglass.
For most of the third quarter, none of Frederick Douglass’ starters played. The Broncos had a deep bench, therefore even after their starters went out, they continued to maintain a lead.
Overall, Scott County couldn’t keep up with Frederick Douglass’ high-powered offense.
The Broncos will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at 7:30 to face Henry Clay. The Cardinals will also play on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. hosting Bryan Station.
