Kentucky rugby’s developmental team took down Drury premier 57-22 Saturday afternoon.
The first half started slow, with Kentucky and Drury being knotted up at halftime 17-17 with each team scoring multiple tries with a few missed conversions.
“I thought we started slow, but I feel like we picked it up in the second half.” lock Jack Kolesar said.
The second half is where Kentucky started to find its form as the Cats scored two tries in a seven-minute span, with both conversions being good. Drury would then score a try, making the game a seven-point lead for Kentucky.
From that point on, Kentucky would find its groove for both the offense and the defense, being unstoppable for the rest of the game.
Drury scored a try in the second half to make it a seven-point game, which would be the last time that it would score for the rest of the game.
As for Kentucky’s offense, it would go on and score a total of 40 points in the second half.
Kentucky’s defense in the second half would be a big support in the win, making multiple stops and keeping the lead safe.
“Drury was a skilled team,” Kolesar said. “They came a long way to not lose.”
The win was a big confidence booster for the Wildcats, who’s premier team was supposed to play Thomas More before it was canceled, as the developmental team was able to beat a premier outfit.
This would be the last game played before the upcoming Southeastern Collegiate Rugby Conference (SCRC) Tournament as Kentucky earned a first round bye.
“Everyone had a great game, all around (it) was beautiful,” Kolesar said, shouting out teammates Ezra Blackman, Chester Hale, Bryson Shelton and Jake Temple.
Kentucky rugby will return to action on Nov. 2 after its bye week at the SCRC Semifinals at home at 1 p.m. ET.
