Kentucky football (3-4, 1-4 SEC) fell to the Florida Gators (4-3, 2-2 SEC) on the road by a lopsided score of 48-20.
Both teams entered the game on losses as the Wildcats were bested by Vanderbilt at home and the Gators lost to Tennessee in overtime.
With the loss, Kentucky snapped its three-game winning streak against the Gators.
The Wildcats won the toss and elected to defer to the second half, which meant the Gators got the first chance on offense.
With that first offensive opportunity, Florida quarterback DJ Lagway showed his versatility by scrambling for a first down and connecting with a 40-yard pass on third down to Eugene Wilson III that set the Gators in the redzone.
The Wildcats defense did not allow the touchdown, but did lose their chance at a shutout as Trey Smack knocked in a 29-yard field goal to give the Gators a 3-0 lead.
With their first possession, Brock Vandagriff and the rest of the offense got a first down, but nothing more which forced a punt that pinned the Gators deep in their own territory.
The offensive struggles for Kentucky continued as they were forced to punt on their second possession after a three-and-out.
With its third possession on offense, Florida got a drive going as they were moving down the field when the first quarter came to close. To open quarter two, Florida faced a third and short in the redzone.
Kentucky held on third down and the Gators opted for a 39-yard field goal which was good to extend their lead to 6-0.
With the game now tied, the defense stunned the Gators offensive momentum by forcing a punt to give the ball right back to the offense.
However, they did not take advantage of the opportunity as they were forced to punt after a three-and-out.
The Wildcats offense looked to find its footing now trailing, but were unable to as a Vandagriff pass on third and five was intercepted by Trikweze Bridges.
The pick was quickly nullified by Kristian Story picked off a Lagway pass intended for Chimere Dike and returned it 63-yards to set up the Wildcats with great field position.
Big plays continued to hurt the Wildcats on defense as a 58-yard completion to Elijhah Badger set the Gators up in the redzone.
Facing an even bigger deficit, Vandagriff and the offense got another shot at as the clocked winded down to the two-minute timeout.
Out of the break, Vandagriff threw another interception as his pass for Barion Brown was intercepted by Devin Moore and returned to the Kentucky 1-yard line.
Jadan Baugh punched in his third touchdown of the game to extend the Gator lead to 27-6.
Following the kick return, the Wildcats defense forced a three-and-out, but it left just two seconds on the clock, so Vandagriff kneeled to end the half.
Out of the locker room, Vandagriff and the offense took over and immediately faced adversity as they remained on the field for fourth and two. The drive remained alive as Vandagriff connected with Josh Kattus for a 21-yard reception.
The Wildcats one score deficit did not last long as Florida moved right down the field using explosive plays once again to set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Baugh to extend its lead to 34-20.
Vandagriff and company had a productive drive going as the third quarter came to a close and they were into Gator territory.
On defense, the Cats forced a three-and-out to give the ball back to the offense as they tried to back into the ballgame.
The offense was unable to achieve that as they were forced to go for it on fourth down and long but came up short.
Another explosive play, this time a 40-yard completion from Lagway to Badger set up Buagh’s fifth rushing touchdown of the night to extend the Florida lead to 41-20.
Following the interception touchdown, neither team scored again as time ticked away and the game went final.
Following the loss, Kentucky will return home to take on the Auburn Tigers on Saturday, Oct. 26, with kickoff scheduled for 7:45 p.m. ET.
