For Kentucky women’s soccer, Makala Woods and Alexis Tylenda have been essential in recent games against LSU and Vanderbilt.
Woods, in particular, has been playing brilliantly lately, opening both games with goals.
She scored barely two minutes into the game against LSU, establishing the tone for Kentucky’s effort. Then, thirty seconds into the game against Vanderbilt, she scored her eighth goal of the season from a penalty kick.
Even with LSU’s dangerous scorers, Woods has found a way to score in these recent games.
During the Cats-Tigers matchup, Head Coach Troy Fabiano believed in maintaining the team’s composure and ability to see out the game, even when under pressure.
“When we finally (had) one possession, we couldn’t break a line,” he said. “So, we absorb way too much pressure because there’s a lot (of) space, because Woods is different. She’s fast and she’s powerful and she’s strong.”
Another important player last week who has made a big impact on the team’s performance overall is Tylenda.
In both games, her midfield presence has been essential, giving her teammates stability and opening possibilities. She also sealed the LSU game with a late goal in the 85th minute, giving Kentucky all three points. This was her third goal of the season.
“I had goals early in the season, but I’ve been waiting on it, and it’s great to get it,” she said. “But it was really a team effort, the whole time we pressed the whole game.”
Tylenda is a vital member of the team thanks to her ability to manage the tempo and distribute the ball well.
Unfortunately for the Cats, the final score was 3-1 against Vanderbilt with the Cats falling short despite their best efforts.
Nonetheless, Woods’ and Tylenda’s efforts highlight how important they are to the squad and their ability to guide Kentucky to a future triumph.
Both stars will have a chance to redeem the loss to the Commodores on Friday, Oct. 18, when the Wildcats host the No. 11 Auburn Tigers. Kick off against Auburn is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air live on the SEC Network+.
