Following some unconventional delay’s, Kentucky men’s golf finished 10th in the Windon Memorial Classic.
With the event being a par 71 with two rounds — 36 holes — planned for day one, the 16 teams at Conway Farms Golf Club displayed that there may not have been enough hours in the day for the ambitious plan.
As the sun set on the Windon Memorial Classic, round two was forced to be postponed with a plethora of golfers with several holes left to play. These athletes were forced to, instead, finish the second round before teeing off for the third round on day two.
The overall placement was the Cats’ second top 10 finish of the year, but it meant more to one golfer in particular.
For Jack Schoenberger, the Windon would be his third straight finish in the top 20 this fall and 17th consecutive of his collegiate career. Furthermore, Schoenberger finished as the Wildcats’ top individual player for the second time this season.
The junior tied for 19th at the Folds of Honor Collegiate, 14th at the Bearcat Invitational and tied for 17th at the Windon.
On day one of the Classic, UK found some success thanks to Schoenberger and sophomore Solomon Petrie, who both ended round one at 2-under par.
Notably from round one, Petrie came out hot, scoring 2-under par (69) for his career-low 18 holes. Petrie started and ended the round with a birdie to help his career-low score.
Looking at the other scores from round one, freshman Gavin Clutts scored 74 (+3) and graduate student Jackson Klutznick scored 75 (+4) at the end of round one.
Kentucky kept improving as day two began, placing as high as second on the leaderboard.
Senior Jansen Preston played a role in the hot start in round two with birdies on holes 14 and 15. Preston ended the round shooting par.
Unfortunately for Kentucky, its success in round two was short lived. The deeper the Wildcats got into the course, their team spot kept moving further down the leaderboard.
At the end of the unfinished round two on day one, Kentucky sat tied for eighth at 13-over.
After the delayed golfers wrapped up round two, the third and final day of play began.
As a team in round three, the Wildcats would put up more squares in their scorecard than circles, totaling 21 bogeys and two double bogeys as a team. Oddly enough, every Wildcat bogeyed on hole 17 par-3 in the final round.
Despite that bit of negativity, each Wildcat in round three shot a birdie on at least two holes, and none of Kentucky’s golfers shot above 4-over-par in round three.
Petrie finished second on the Wildcats in terms of placement as he tied for 32nd overall (+3).
The youngest of the Wildcats, Clutts, finished the tournament 51st on the leaderboard and scored a 223 (+10) for the tournament.
While the eldest of the Wildcats, Preston and Klutznick, tied for 52nd (+11) and 77th (+18) individually at the end of the two-day event.
The Wildcats will return to action on Thursday, Oct. 7, where they will host for the first time since 2015 when they welcome teams to the Lexington Country Club for the Cullan Brown Collegiate.
