Penalties cost cats the win: Kentucky Hockey loses in overtime to Miami Ohio.
The Kentucky Wildcats were defeated 5-4 by the Miami (OH) RedHawks on Friday, Oct. 5, at the Lexington Ice Center.
The story of the night was penalties, as the RedHawks only managed to score one goal at even strength. The game-winning goal came in overtime during three-on-three play with every other goal being scored with either a man advantage or disadvantage.
If that wasn’t enough, if the penalties were the story, the game-tying goal was a tragedy.
As Kentucky regained possession in the third period during a five-on-four powerplay, Miami was called for a delayed penalty.
The Cats pulled their goalie to get an extra man on the ice, making the advantage a decisive six-on-four with a surefire chance to score.
Unfortunately for them, an errant pass would come to haunt the Wildcats as it sailed past their sticks, all the way across the ice and into their own empty net.
This goal signaled a shift in momentum as no more goals would be scored during regulation with both defenses tightening up.
As it entered its second straight overtime game this season, Kentucky was unable to get revenge for its elimination in the conference tournament against the RedHawks last season.
Losing the return trip to Miami as well, the Cats will look to bounce back on Friday, Oct. 18, for the first contest of a two-game series on the road at Liberty.
