Kentucky women’s soccer (8-1-2, 0-1-2) dominated Georgia 1-0 for most of the pair’s Thursday match, but a late equalizer saw the Bulldogs draw 1-1.
Kentucky had seven shots on goal compared to Georgia’s three, outshooting the reigning SEC Tournament winners 17-9.
In the 20th minute, Sophia Mattice’s attempt on goal was saved by Georgia’s goalkeeper in the box, but not collected.
Makala Woods, who was positioned on the goal line, then received the rebound from Mia Bookhard and tapped the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead. Woods continues to lead the squad in scoring with her fifth goal of the year.
As one of the leaders on the team, Woods showed that hard work pays off as the team played its best against a strong opponent.
“Those are the SEC champs last year, so we gave them a run for their money for ninety minutes and it just proves everyone needs to put some respect on our name and give us some credit,” she said.
There were exchanges between the two teams in the second half and, although Kentucky had many chances to increase its lead, the Wildcat finishing fell short.
Georgia, however, also had its chances to respond and, in the 80th minute, caught the Wildcats lacking on a break away and scored to level the match at one goal.
The Wildcats will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29, as they will make their first ever trip to Norman, Oklahoma, in program history at 2 p.m. ET for an SEC contest against the Sooners.
