Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear signed an executive order that will ban conversion therapy for minors in the Commonwealth.
The order, signed on Sept. 18, 2024, will prohibit minors from having to undergo “conversion therapy,” and will also prevent state or federal funds from being used to fund the therapy.
The order will also address medical boards, and will look at the possibility of revoking the licenses from those who practice “conversion therapy” on minors.
“We’ve heard the voices of LGBTQ Kentuckians and we stand with them,” Beshear said in an X post, formerly known as Twitter, following the signing. “Today I was proud to sign an executive order banning dangerous ‘conversion ‘therapy’’ on our kids. No child, regardless of their sexuality, should be subjected to harm.”
Beshear signed this order after a similar law regarding conversion therapy and gender-affirming care failed in the state legislature earlier this year.
“This is not about red or blue,” Beshear said in a statement via the Courier Journal. “It is not about politics at all, and to me, it’s not even about gender or sexuality. It’s about protecting our youth from an incubate practice that hurts them.”
