Kentucky fell 13-12 in a close defensive battle to the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs in a game where kicker Alex Raynor scored all the Wildcats’ points.
The senior went four for four on the night including two 50+ yard kicks and a school-record.
“He’s just been very steady,” head coach Mark Stoops said post-game. “He’s always got a calm demeanor. He’s very accurate in practice. Just does his job.”
Kentucky got on the board first as Raynor hit a career-long and Kentucky record 55-yard field goal that just narrowly made it through the bottom right corner of the uprights.
When the kick left his foot, Raynor had no gut feeling of whether it was going to be good or not.
“It was an okay hit ball,” Raynor said. “All the training and stuff that me and my coach do, it’s making those miss-hits still go in distance especially.”
He would go on to hit a field goal in each quarter of the game with a 32-yarder in the second and a 40-yarder in the third.
The last ball to pass through the posts was another deep one — 51 yards — to put the Cats behind by just one point.
Unfortunately for the Wildcat faithful, Raynor never went out for the game-winning kick as the Wildcats came up just short of getting one last chance.
“I mean, you always want the opportunity,” Raynor said. “This team battled their butts off, you know.”
Now sitting at 1-2 on the season, the Wildcats will take on Ohio next Saturday, Sept. 21. with kickoff scheduled for 12:45 p.m. ET.
