Memphis names assistant as Calipari’s replacement
April 7, 2009
After a week of searching the country for a new head coach, Memphis found its man in its backyard.
Josh Pastner, 31, will be named the Tigers’ head coach at a Tuesday afternoon news conference in Memphis. Pastner served one year as an assistant coach at Memphis under Calipari, who left Memphis last week to become the new head coach at UK.
Last week, Pastner told the Tuscon Citizen he would join Calipari’s staff at UK. Pastner spoke with the Citizen on March 31, the night Calipari signed his UK contract but a day before he was officially announced at a news conference.
“(Calipari) is the boss man and I’m following him there,†Parnell said at the time. “It’s exciting because that is probably the most storied program in college basketball.â€
Prior to his one-year stint at Memphis, Pastner served as an assistant coach at Arizona, his alma mater. Pastner made his biggest impression at Arizona on the recruiting trail and as a tutor to Arizona’s big men, including All-Americans Luke Walton and Channing Frye.
Pastner spent six years as an assistant at Arizona before joining Calipari’s staff at Memphis for the 2008-09 season. He graduated from Arizona in 1998, playing for Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson as a walk-on. Pastner was a member of the Arizona team that topped UK in the 1997 national championship game.
Starting in 2000, he served as an undergraduate assistant under Olson and worked his way up the ranks from there.
Before hiring Pastner, Memphis pursued (to varying degrees) Southern California’s Tim Floyd, Missouri’s Mike Anderson, Baylor’s Scott Drew and Florida State’s Leonard Hamilton.
