Student found dead in Haggin Hall

January 28, 2010
BREAKING NEWS:
Zachary Kertis, a UK freshman, died in Haggin Hall Wednesday night. The 911 call made from a cell phone came in to UK Police around 10:16 p.m.
UK Police Chief Joe Monroe said there is no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding the student’s death.
Joe Sumner, a biology freshman and Haggin Hall resident, performed CPR on Kertis before paramedics arrived on the scene.
Sumner said he heard Kertis’ roommate yelling for help from his dorm room. Sumner entered the room and found Kertis lying on the ground near his desk. Trained as a lifeguard, Sumner checked Kertis’ vital signs.
“He wasn’t that cold but he definitely wasn’t normal body temperature,†Sumner said. “His lips were blue … no pulse.â€
Kertis’ roommate put the paramedics on speakerphone and Sumner said he performed CPR for about 10 minutes before help arrived. After checking vital signs, Sumner said the paramedics took Kertis to the hospital.
Sumner, who had never met Kertis before, said he smelled no traces of alcohol on Kertis. Because the death has been declared an ongoing investigation, police records could not be released at this time.
UK spokesman Jimmy Stanton said he did not have any further information on the case but the university will keep Kertis’ family in their thoughts and prayers.
