Men’s chorus to host own version of ‘The Sing-Off’

It is “UK’s best kept secret,” said Jeff Johnson, director of choral activities for the UK men’s choir.
Johnson may be a tad biased, but he is not the only person talking about the all men’s choir.
“We could be considered No. 1 in the country, “ Johnson said.
The UK men’s choir will hold its annual fall Men’s Chorus Extravaganza Thursday night where students and staff will hear the vocal stylings of four a capella groups.
“It’s a rare opportunity to hear men sign together,” Johnson said.
“The sound that men make together has such rich tones that female voices just can’t produce.”
The UK men’s choir has made quite a name for itself in the last few years.
Last year, the vocal group traveled to Chicago to the National Convention of Chorus Directors, which could be considered the Final Four of collegiate choruses, Johnson said. The men gave a “prestigious performance” that received a standing ovation.
“UK has a very talented and very underrated music program,” said Kristin Dreasler, a UK chorus member.
The group, which is now “riding high,” is ready for its version of the sing-off as host of the Extravaganza, Jefferson said.
The concert is based on the hit NBC TV show, “The Sing-Off,” hosted by Nick Lachey.
The show is an a capella singing competition that highlights singing groups competing against each other. The Chorus Extravaganza at UK will not be a competition but will spotlight the local singing talents.
Four a capella groups will perform, including two high school choirs and two college men’s choruses. Scott County High School’s group, “Great Scott” and Trinity Christian Academy’s “The Rainmen” will perform along with UK’s own “AcoustiCats.” Former AcoustiCats also started the men’s chorus groups at both Scott County High School and Western Kentucky University.
The annual fall concert is known for entertaining performances.
“These boys are talented,” Dreasler said. “If you know anything about any music, you should come out and support.”
Even if students know nothing about music, the group encourages people to come and enjoy the Top 40 sounds of The Men’s Chorus.
Antics such as serenades aimed at women in the audience are also expected from the AcoustiCats.
