Men’s soccer draws in scoreless match without Cedergren

UK men’s soccer posted a shutout in a scoreless draw against the University of South Carolina on Sunday at the UK Soccer Complex as sophomore goalkeeper Callum Irving made three saves on the match.

Head coach Johan Cedergren was not on the sideline as UK’s coach for the match, as he earned a  red card after Tuesday’s game against Evansville University, which the Cats lost 2-1.

Cedergren earned a red card after Tuesday’s match against Since the red card was issued after the match, the penalty of being ejected from the game was designated for the match against South Carolina.

Cedergren was not available for comments after Sunday’s match. Players were also not available for comments.

The match was the second game of the season to go into overtime for the Cats (3-6-1, 1-1-1 C-USA). UK previously moved into overtime in a 2-1 victory against Old Dominion University on Oct. 4.

The shutout was Irving’s third of the year, previously having shutouts against Indiana University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne in a 4-0 victory on Sept. 8, and against Georgia State University in a 1-0 victory in the season opener.

UK outshot the Gamecocks 28-11 in the match, including a 13-1 margin in both overtimes. South Carolina’s freshman goalkeeper Marco Velez made six saves during the match to keep the Cats scoreless.

Freshman forward Kaelon fox had the most shots for the Cats with six, two of them being on goal. Senior forward Tyler Riggs had the second most shots on the team with five, but none of which were on goal.

Sophomore midfielder Bryan Celis returned to play for UK after missing the previous eight matches with an injury. Celis played 97 out of the 110 minutes for the match and fired two shots.

In the second overtime, junior defender Jaytoe Teh had to leave the game with an apparent leg injury. No word on the severity of Teh’s injury.

UK will remain at home to take on Valparaiso University on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the UK Soccer Complex. The Crusaders (3-4-5) are currently on a five-game winless streak.
