2017: The year for superheroes
August 23, 2017
It’s an exciting year to be a superhero fan. The blockbuster engine of superhero movies is in full steam ahead and superhero movies have become mainstream. In fact, they are becoming one of the most successful genres and have become somewhat of an American pastime.
So far, it’s been a great year for superhero movies with a few heavy hitter movies that were also critically acclaimed and universally loved.
The year started off well with Logan which was a darker movie geared towards a more mature audience. This movie smashed all expectations, making Rotten Tomatoes’ number two slot on their best superhero movies of all time list. Logan was the finish to the universally loved anti-hero-ish superhero played by Hugh Jackman, Wolverine. Logan was an amazing movie filled with action and a heart wrenching plot that was a fitting end to this fan favorite.
Logan was the runner up to another movie this year on Rotten Tomatoes’ list. DC’s Wonder Woman was a box office hit. This movie was awarded number one and earned nearly an eight by IMDB. It was universally loved by the public. Wonder Woman had a heavy hitting cast of strong female characters with a female director. It was the first Wonder Woman film on the big screen since the characters creation in 1941.
Another extremely anticipated movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which was the sequel to one of the biggest hits in superhero movie. Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most universally loved superhero movies, featuring Chris Pratt as Star-Lord and Bradley Cooper as a talking space Raccoon named Rocket. While the sequel did not receive as much praise as the original, it still was well-received and loved.
These three movies alone have made 2017 a great year for superhero movies, but there are also some that could make it potentially the best year for superhero movies yet. Coming in November, there are two blockbuster superhero movies that are already being hyped. Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok may be the conclusion to the story of Thor in the Marvel cinematic universe, as Ragnarok is the end of the world in Norse mythology.
Right after Thor comes the next addition to the DC cinematic universe and the movie that all the DC films have been leading up to, Justice League. Justice League will be the first iteration of DC’s most popular hero team-up and counterpart to the Avengers on the big screen since the idea was first created in 1940.
Hopefully, this will make up for the flop that DC encountered with Batman vs. Superman and will redeem some of the many mistakes made in assembling their cinematic universe.
There are many other exciting movies building upon the movies previously mentioned in the years to come, including more Justice League films and Avengers: Infinity War.
