UK sororities to kick off Continuous Open Bidding on Wednesday

The warm welcome of a sisterhood can facilitate the transition from high school and enrich the college experience, but the decision to join a sorority doesn’t have to be rushed.

Women who are interested in joining Greek Life are invited by the UK Panhellenic Council to attend a Continuous Open Bidding event on Wednesday, Jan. 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the combo classroom inside The 90.

Continuous Open Bidding is an opportunity for anyone who either chose not to participate in Primary Membership Recruitment Week or did not receive a bid during the fall semester to meet the chapters and explore the possibility of sisterhood in a less-structured setting.

Vice President of Recruitment Elect Hannah Waltmon organizes events related to both Formal Recruitment and Continuous Open Bidding. She described the event as a “low-pressure opportunity to meet chapter members from across campus.”

Sorority membership offers community service and leadership opportunities, involvement in both a local and global chapter of support and a lifelong connection to women with similar interests and goals.

Members of the eligible chapters will be available to meet with potential new members, discuss what sets their sorority apart from the rest and answer any questions.

Although not all sororities participate in Continuous Open Bidding because some fill their pledge quota during Membership Recruitment Week, seven National Panhellenic Council sororities will be represented at the event: Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Delta Zeta, Kappa Delta and Phi Mu.

Continuous Open Bidding has no registration fee and is coordinated by each chapter individually. There are no formal commitments, and anyone who is interested is encouraged to attend.

Women can simply show up at the event and will be registered by student ID number. Attire is casual, and snacks and drinks will be provided.

“Going Greek gives women the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than themselves,” Waltmon said. “It makes UK’s campus feel smaller and has the potential to provide women with lifelong friendships.”

Editor’s note: This article previously mentioned National Pan-Hellenic, United Greek Coalition stories and other non-Panhellenic sororities participate in Continuous Open Bidding. This was in error and was corrected to fix that.
