Lexington Police say that a string of burglaries in a near-campus neighborhood are likely to be related.

Between April 5 and April 9, there were three reported burglaries on the 100 and 200 blocks of University Avenue. During that time span police reports show that three houses were broken into, two cars were stolen, along with multiple laptops and other valuables. University Avenue is located near UK Hospital and runs adjacent to State Street.  

“We can’t say for certain that all three of these cases are connected, however given the similarities in method/timing/location of the crimes, it appears likely they are related,” Lexington Police spokesperson Brenna Angel told the Kernel.

Police say that in all three burglaries, the suspect entered the houses via unlocked doors and windows.

On the morning on April 5, police were dispatched to a home on University Avenue with reports of an auto theft. According to the police report, one of residents of the home found that his backpack, laptop and 2006 Honda Pilot had been stolen.

There was also damage done to another car in the driveway, which likely occurred when the stolen car was leaving the driveway, reports show. The car was recovered on Creekside Court later, but the backpack and computer were not recovered.

Four days later, on April 9, police received a call from another house on University. At 4 a.m. a burglar had broken into the house but left when a resident awoke to a man standing in her bedroom. Once the resident screamed, the man ran from the house but not without taking a laptop, purse and pair of shoes.

The resident described the man she saw as a 6-foot-tall black male with no facial hair.

Around noon that same day, police were called back to University with reports of yet another burglary. A resident of the home explained that she heard noises in the house around 2 a.m. but she had thought nothing of it.

The resident of the home explained that a living room window had been left open overnight for fresh air. In the morning a purse, two laptops and a Hyundai Elantra were missing. The Elantra was later recovered on Devonport Drive.
