Kentucky baseball (20-14, 6-9 SEC) walked off Miami (OH) (19-17) 4-3.
“It was the coaches,” Ethan Hindle said. “They’re always putting pressure and firing bullets. They gave me that sign, so I just went out and executed it.”
With two outs in the ninth, Hindle laid down a bunt towards the third-base line, driving in Kyuss Gargett.
Kentucky’s pitching was great and kept them in this game. Ethan Walker started and pitched four innings, allowing only one hit and zero runs while having five strikeouts.
Kentucky’s offense started the game hot as Tyler Bell doubled in the first, and with two outs, Dylan Koontz delivered a double that scored Bell and gave Kentucky the lead.
Koontz added to his big day in the fourth, leading off the inning with a double, and was later driven in by a Cole Hage fielder’s choice.
In the fifth, the Cats added to their lead when Hindle was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and he stole third before being driven in by a Luke Lawrence sacrifice fly.
Freshman Zak Spurrier allowed one hit and had two strikeouts in his inning of work.
Miami’s offense broke out in the sixth when Leighton Harris came in. The Redhawks had three hits and one hit-by -pitch off Harris, which scored two runs.
With runners on first and second, Kentucky Head Coach Nick Mingione went to Nile Adcock, who struck out the next two batters, but two wild pitches allowed the Redhawks to tie the game 3-3.
Adcock retired the Redhawks in order in the seventh, adding two more strikeouts.
14 straight batters would be retired in order by both teams until Bell was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning but was stranded at first.
Cole Hentschel was on in the ninth and struck out the side. The righty came into the dugout fired up.
“He came off the mound just like a dog screaming at us, telling us to let’s go and firing us up. It gave us that momentum to be able to get it done at the plate,” Hindle said.
In the bottom half of the inning, singles by Gargett and Hage set up the Hindle walk-off bunt single.
Following the win, Kentucky will play No. 4 Tennessee on Friday, April 18, to kick off its three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
