Kentucky women’s tennis started the weekend struggling, dealing with Oklahoma and taking a 6-1 loss against the Sooners on March 14. The Wildcats would save their weekend, traveling to Fayetteville and picking up a 4-3 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks.
The Wildcats looked to start hot with Lizzy Stevens and Ellie Eades picking up a 6-3 doubles win. Asunción Jadue and Julia Zhu would look to keep the momentum but would go down 6-3 while the duo of Zoe Hammond and Ellie Myers went down 6-3 in their match, giving the Sooners a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.
The Wildcats were unable to stop the Sooners’ flow, starting with Stevens being unable to keep her winning ways going, falling 6-1, 6-3 against No. 74 Emma Staker. Zhu was unable to recover from her doubles loss, taking a rough loss against Salakthip Ounmuang 6-2, 6-2.
Tess Bucher looked to come back after going down in the first set 6-4, but would lose with Ava Catanzarite taking the second set 6-2 and guaranteeing a win for the Sooners.
Fans would see finishes from the match-ups of Myers and Chloe Noel as well as Hammond going against Alina Shcherbinina. Myers would put up a fight, but would end up going down 6-4, 7-6(8-6).
Hammond, ranked No. 101, would pull off the impressive victory against No.34 Shcherbinina. After losing the first set 6-3, she would come back to take the second set 6-3. The third set was a back-and-forth tight battle but Hammond would come out with the win 6-4.
After the loss, Kentucky would come out with a fire against Arkansas, looking for its first SEC win of the season.
The Wildcats were unable to get the point in doubles with Eades and Stevens going down 6-1 as well Zhu and Jadue going down 6-5. Hammond and Myers’ match was stopped early.
Kentucky would not be deterred, starting with Jadue avenging her doubles loss by taking down Grace O’Donnell 6-3, 6-3, tying up the game for the Wildcats.
Bucher was looking to secure the upset against No. 82 Anet Koskel, but would fall just short, going down 6-4, 6-4. Stevens would come back with a vengeance, taking the first set 6-2, but Katarina Pavlechova would come back hard, taking the second set 6-0. Stevens was looking to get herself a win, coming back with a fire and taking the third set 6-1 to re-tie up the score.
Hammond would continue her impressive weekend, going against No. 55 Carolina Gomez Alonso. After going down in the first set 6-1, she would come back with a fire, winning second set 6-0 then the third 6-4, giving the Wildcats the lead.
Zhu looked to seal the deal for Kentucky. After losing the first set 6-4 against Olga Bienzobas, she would take the second with a 6-3 win. She couldn’t keep the scoring going, losing the third set 6-2 and leaving it down to the final match to decide who takes the win.
Myers, with the pressure on, headed into her third set after splitting the first two sets against Jimena Gomez Alonso 6-3 apiece. With the score at 5-3 in the set, Myers would drop one game before sealing the deal for Kentucky with a 6-4 win in third set.
With the win from Kentucky, it claimed its first win in the SEC, now sitting at a 7-8 overall record and 1-6 in conference play.
The Wildcats will be back in action, taking on Mississippi State on March 21. The match will take place at the Hillary J. Boone Center at 5 p.m. ET.
