Its officially MLB Opening Day and Kentucky baseball pitchers Taylor Rogers, Zach Pop and Zach Thompson are on Opening Day rosters.
The Wildcats have a host of players on MiLB rosters including Ryan Waldschmidt, Émilien Pitre and Ryan Nicholson.
Taylor Rogers is the oldest of the three and will be the closest to Kentucky as the reliever is on the Cincinnati Reds.
Rogers was drafted in the 11th round in 2012 by the Minnesota Twins and made his debut in 2016. Rogers pitched for the Twins until 2022 when he was traded to the San Diego Padres. At the 2022 trade deadline, Rogers was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers.
The righty signed with the San Francisco Giants to join his twin brother Tyler in 2023 and stayed there until he was traded to Cincinnati in January of this year.
In his career so far, Rogers has pitched 490.2 innings and has a 3.34 ERA, 573 strikeouts and a 1.18 WHIP.
The youngest Wildcat on the list is Zach Thompson, who will be entering his fourth season with the St. Louis Cardinals.
Thompson went 19th overall in 2019 to the Cardinals and has remained with the club since. The left-hander will begin the 2025 season on the 15-day injured list.
In his three seasons at Kentucky, Thompson pitched 196.2 innings in which he struck out 268 batters and pitched to a 3.20 ERA.
So far in his MLB career, Thompson has pitched 118 innings, and he has accumulated a 4.50 ERA. The lefty has struck out 119 batters and has a 1.36 WHIP.
Rounding out the list is Zach Pop, who will be entering the fifth season of his career after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The righty made his debut in 2021 with the Miami Marlins before being traded to the Toronto Blue Jays at the 2022 trade deadline. Pop is still on the Blue Jays heading into 2025.
In the 2012 season at Kentucky, Pop threw 20.2 innings and totaled a 3.48 ERA along with 20 strikeouts.
In his four seasons at the major league level, Pop has pitched 155.2 innings in which he has accumulated a 4.45 ERA. The righty has struck out 123 batters and has a career 1.31 WHIP.
Pop and Blue Jays will take on the Orioles with first pitch set for 3:07 p.m.
If Thompson was not injured, his Cardinals take on the Twins at 4:15 p.m.
Rogers and the Reds are set to take on the Giants at 4:10 p.m.
