No. 28 Kentucky men’s tennis (8-3, 1-0 SEC) faced off against No. 26 Mississippi State (12-2, 2-1 SEC) in its SEC opener at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex, winning 4-2.
Coming off a 5-2 victory over Mississippi State last year, when Kentucky was ranked No. 6 and Mississippi State No. 15, the Wildcats knew their opponent would be looking for a different outcome this time. However, with another win, Kentucky has now claimed its sixth consecutive victory over Mississippi State.
The Wildcats secured the victory with singles wins from No. 69 Antoine Ghibaudo, No. 81 Jack Loutit, No. 121 Charlelie Cosnet and Matt Rankin, losing only one match while another went unfinished.
Kentucky swept in doubles as Cosnet and Ghibaudo extended their winning streak to six matches, defeating Mississippi State’s Dusan Milanovic and Michal Novansky 6-4 on court three. The Bulldogs responded with Loutit and Eli Stephenson falling to Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez 6-4. Mississippi State clinched the doubles point when Martin Breysach and Jaden Weekes fell 7-6.
Singles began and No. 69 Ghibaudo was the first to finish, he won against No. 67 Jovanovic (MSU) taking the 7-6 (4), 6-4 victory. After, N0. 121 Cosnet defeated No. 115 Niccolo Baroni (MSU) 7-6 (1), 6-3.
Overall, the Wildcats claimed the 4-2 victory in singles play.
Kentucky will be on the road next, facing Florida on Friday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville.
