Kentucky men’s club lacrosse (4-0) fell to Miami (Ohio) 12-10 on Friday, Feb. 14.
Miami (Ohio) led the beginning of the game 2-1 until the final minute of the first quarter, where Kentucky attacker Mikey Ancona managed to tie the quarter 2-2.
Miami came once again, striking in the second quarter and doing everything it could to put the ball in the net leading 3-2. Miami continued connecting passes, leaving the Wildcats with small touches of the ball. Then, the Cats took an opportunity off a goalie clear to run the ball up and set up a play before midfielder Peter Johnson rolled the net and snuck it in the goal.
Both teams scored again, entering halftime tied 4-4.
Kentucky took a 6-5 lead in the third quarter and began taking more shot opportunities. Miami and Kentucky both scored, making it once again a tied quarter with 7-7.
The fourth quarter was a battle of possession, with both teams alternating shots, ultimately leaving the game 12-10 with the Cats falling to Miami (Ohio).
Kentucky men’s lacrosse recently made the switch and became MCLA Division-I, joining the ACL conference. With this new change, the Cats struggled in the beginning of the season, going 0-4 in their first games. After the defeat against Miami (Ohio), the Cats were eager to break the losing streak and come back victorious.
The Cats began their second game of the weekend with determination, securing a victory over Kennesaw State.
The Wildcats entered thee game under difficult conditions, as the field was covered in snow. Teammates actively shoveled the sidelines throughout the game to keep the field playable and the sidelines visible.
However, snow aside, the Cats secured a goal a minute into the game, setting the tone. Continuing the momentum, the Cats fired off six goals, ending the first quarter with a 6-1 lead.
Eager to end its losing streak, Kentucky scored significantly more goals and did not allow Kennesaw State to score until the end of the quarter, closing the first half with a 10-2 lead.
In the third quarter, the snow picked up, and, after each goal, the Cats slid through the snow in celebration.
Kentucky closed out the game with an 18-10 victory over Kennesaw State, beginning what it hopes to be a new winning streak in MCLA Division-I.
The Wildcats will be away next, visiting Clemson and NC State.
