Kentucky (21-4, 10-3 SEC) women’s basketball played Missouri (13-15, 2-11 SEC) in Mizzou Arena, marking the first time these teams have played this season.
Clara Strack had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds as the team held on to beat Missouri 73-65.
Strack’s jumper gave Kentucky the lead after winning the tipoff. Teonni Key made it 4-2 to the Cats after Missouri tied the game.
Key made a 3-pointer to trim the margin to one, 8–7, after Missouri scored the next six points. UK took the lead 9-8 thanks to a bucket from Dazia Lawrence.
Strack’s basket and a free throw gave UK a 21–20 lead after Missouri scored the first two points of the second period. Strack scored once more to give the Cats a 23-22 advantage after the Tigers regained the lead. Saniah Tyler’s layup increased the advantage to 25-22, but Missouri’s consecutive 3-pointers put the Tigers ahead 28-25.
The fact that Kentucky had 10 turnovers and Missouri had 12 was possibly the game’s most significant statistic. Missouri only scored five points off Kentucky’s mistakes, while the Cats converted the Tigers’ errors into 22 points.
The Cats were within one after a basket by Amelia Hassett, but Missouri made another 3-pointer to increase its advantage to 31-27.
Strack’s shot tied the score at 31-31, and Lawrence’s goal reduced the margin to two. The score at halftime, however, was 34-31 after a 3-pointer by Missouri.
Key finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while Georgia Amoore finished with 19 points and five assists for the Cats.
Kentucky led 42-39 after an Amoore three, but Missouri had the solution and tied the score with a three of its own. After two Key free throws, an Amoore basket and a Tyler three, the Cats took a 49-42 lead. The Cats led 51-42 after a 9-0 run that ended by a basket from Strack. After three quarters, Kentucky would have a 54-47 advantage.
Missouri made another 3-pointer to cut the advantage to two, but Strack scored underneath once more to put UK ahead 65-60. UK led 67-63 after Amoore’s goal, but the Tigers responded with a bucket to narrow the lead to two.
With 16 seconds remaining, Lawrence made two free throws to give the team the win.
