No. 5 seeded Kentucky women’s soccer (11-5-5) lost to No. 4 seeded Notre Dame (14-3-4) by a score of 3-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Notre Dame’s offense had an explosive start, as it knocked in two goals in the first 13 minutes of the match.
The first goal was scored by Izzy Engle in the fourth minute and was assisted by Grace Restovich.
The second goal was scored by Lily Joseph on a penalty kick after Michelle Moskau was called for a foul inside the box.
While the Cats outshot the Fighting Irish 6-5 in the first half, they were unable to cash any of those shots in, which made the score 2-0 at halftime.
The Cats’ offense started the second half much better with four straight shots to open the half.
The last of these shots was a goal from Catherine DeRosa that cut Notre Dame’s lead down to 2-1.
Notre Dame extended its advantage back to two goals after a second goal from Joseph, which made the score 3-1.
Notre Dame had multiple chances throughout the rest of the match to extend the lead, including a shot by Joseph that would have given her a hat trick, but all of them were blocked by Kentucky goalie Marz Josephson.
However, the Cats were unable to get any more goals of their own, which kept the score at 3-1 for the rest of the match.
The loss means the Cats’ season is over at 11 wins, which was the most in a decade and the most under Head Coach Troy Fabiano.
