“Heart Bones,” written by New York Times bestselling author, Colleen Hoover, explores an unexpected romance between 19-year-old Beyah and 20-year-old Samson, who met each other during summer break.
The main character Beyah Grim, has to move in with her father and stepmother to a beach town in Texas for the summer due to unfortunate circumstances with her mother, Janean. Beyah is not happy but understands that this is her last resort until she can move out for college in August.
It is revealed that she does not have a close relationship with her father Brian, since he left her early in her childhood and started a new family. However, he did send money to Beyah as she grew up, but her mom used it to feed her drug addiction.
When Beyah first arrives at the house, she is very closed off because she dealt with financial struggles when she lived with her mom. The lifestyle changes of a proper home, having food every day and being given money was a new exposure to her.
At the beginning of her stay, she meets her stepsister Sara, Sara’s boyfriend Marcos and their mutual friend Samson. She eventually becomes closer with them, and they hang out together all summer.
Although she does become especially close with Samson, they discover that they are both closed books and do not like to share much information about their personal lives.
This creates a commonality and connection between them. However, they both agree to not have a relationship with each other because they are both leaving once the summer is over.
As the summer progresses, secrets are kept and spilled, which creates a plot with many twists and turns. Samson is not the person he originally said he was.
There was more truth to him than what he was telling Beyah. With time, Beyah and Samson as characters learn about growth and what their relationship faces at the end of summer.
“We’re all just trying to find the right person to heal our broken parts,” Hoover writes in the novel.
