No. 4 seeded Kentucky men’s soccer (5-5-6, 4-2-3 Sun Belt) defeated the No. 5 seeded South Carolina Gamecocks (10-4-2, 5-4 Sun Belt) by a score of 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference tournament.
The Wildcats are coming off a 7-4 win against Georgia State to end their regular season, with Logan Dorsey scoring his second hat-trick of his career during the match. Dorsey has been announced as Offensive Player of the Week twice while also being named to the All Sun Belt Conference First Team.
Agustin Lopez, Josh Gordon and Marqes Muir were also named Second-Team All Sun Belt Conference.
Last time Kentucky and South Carolina faced each other, the Cats took a road win 2-0 in the regular season.
Back in the present, the match had a lot of offensive and defensive plays from both teams. 20 minutes into the first half, the Gamecocks had a penalty kick (PK) opportunity. Goalkeeper Casper Mols saved it to decline the free shot for the Gamecocks.
Overall, Mols stepped up and helped the back line during the last couple games after suffering an injury. Despite that, when it mattered most, he was able to get healthy to get back onto the pitch.
The first half finished with both teams still scoreless and, as the second half came around, both teams were still not able to get the ball into the net.
In the 64th minute of the match, Kentucky had an opportunity to go up on the scoreboard with a PK of its own. Logan Dorsey put the Cats up 1-0 with his successful PK, which turned out to be the game-winning goal.
Dorsey leads the team with 12 goals, four game-winners and three assists.
After the win, Kentucky will be returning back to the pitch for its match-up against No. 1 seeded West Virginia on Wednesday, Nov. 13, with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
