Kentucky men’s basketball jumped four spots in the week two AP Top 25 college basketball poll on Monday, taking the No. 19 spot after a 2-0 week.
The Wildcats took care of business in the first week of the Mark Pope era, thrashing Wright State 103-62 and besting Bucknell 100-72 over the weekend.
Kentucky was the fifth highest ranked SEC school in the week two poll, an improvement from being the eighth highest in the week one poll.
Around the conference, Alabama (2-0) stayed put in the No. 2 spot, one behind No. 1 Kansas and just ahead of reigning back-to-back national champions No. 3 UConn.
While the top three remained unchanged, No. 4 and No. 5 could not stay the same as Gonzaga, which Kentucky will face on Dec. 7, stole the No. 4 spot from Houston (No. 8) after the Zags thrashed former No. 8 Baylor (No. 12) 101-63.
Checking in the No. 5 spot was another SEC squad as the Auburn Tigers jumped six spots after beating Houston 74-69.
After the Tigers, Duke rose one spot to No. 6 heading into the StateFarm Champions Classic date with the Wildcats on Tuesday.
No other SEC schools checked into the top 10 as the next highest conference representative was No. 11 Tennessee, which jumped one spot after finishing the week 2-0.
After the Vols, John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks checked in one spot ahead of Kentucky at No. 18 — a one-spot drop — after struggling with Lipscomb and being defeated by Baylor. Kentucky will face Lipscomb on Nov. 19.
Right after Kentucky, No. 20 Florida rose one spot after a 2-0 week, but it was not enough to not be jumped by Pope’s Cats, who had been No. 24 the week prior.
The next jumped conference school was Texas A&M, which slotted in at No. 23, a staggering 10-spot drop, after being stunned by UCF (RV) in its season opener.
It was a bad week for the Texas branch of the SEC as the final school Kentucky jumped in the rankings was former No. 19 Texas, which dropped out of the rankings altogether after being upset by Ohio State (No. 21).
Beyond that, Ole Miss rounded out the top 25 for the conference, dropping one spot down to No. 25 after a struggling 2-0 week.
Texas and Mississippi State both received votes in the poll, but were unable to crack the top 25.
