With the Kentucky Kernel launching high school sports coverage on Friday, reporters from the sports department were on site for two colossal showdowns in high school football.
Traveling to South Oldham High School in Crestwood, Kentucky, the Woodford County Yellow Jackets were unable to complete a thrilling comeback led by quarterback Justus Wertzler, falling 32-27 versus Julian Miles and the Dragons in a ranked 5A affair.
Also, back home in Lexington, Frederick Douglass hosted Louisville Male in a star-studded 6A matchup, with the visitors being victorious 31-28 with multiple NCAA Division-I commits on both rosters.
While these two games stole the spotlight as far as live coverage was concerned, plenty of notable results also took place across the Commonwealth that are worthy of a look into.
Thursday, Oct. 3: Lexington Christian 62, Fort Knox 0
The Eagles of Lexington Christian traveled to Fort Knox and the home… Eagles… were anything but lock down.
After starting 0-2 with losses to Boyle County and Franklin County, LCA has rattled off five straight wins over Pikeville, Cal, Lexington Catholic, Shawnee and now Fort Knox.
Ranked No. 14 by MaxPreps, LCA will next take on W.E.B. DuBois while Fort Knox (0-7) has Shawnee.
Friday, Oct. 4: Henry Clay 6, Bryan Station 56
No. 18 Bryan Station hosted Henry Clay in an all-Lexington affair on Friday, with the Defenders easily routing the Blue Devils.
Bryan Station quarterback James Davis had himself a game and helped his squad improve to 3-3 after a brutal start to the season with losses against Trinity, Boyle County and Bowling Green.
The Blue Devils, to their credit, tried to get things started on the right foot, but the Defenders were too much to handle as Henry Clay remains in search of its very first win of the season.
Station will prepare for a tough road matchup against George Rogers Clark (GRC) while Henry Clay looks ahead to Lafayette.
Friday, Oct. 4: St. Xavier (OH) 3, Trinity 7
Pivoting away from the Lexington area for a moment, the reigning 6A KHSAA state champions, the Trinity Shamrocks, improved to 5-2 with a defensive win over the Cincinnati-based St. Xavier Bombers (Not to be confused with 2021 KHSAA 6A state champions the St. Xavier Tigers).
Despite the offensive troubles, the win was certainly a confidence booster for the Shamrocks and sophomore quarterback Zane Johnson after losing to the St. Xavier Tigers one week ago.
Trinity of Louisville improved to 5-2 on the year with losses to the Tigers and Indiana-based Center Grove. The Shamrocks have wins over Frederick Douglass, Bryan Station, Louisville Male and Carmel (Indiana) as they look to go back-to-back.
Up next, Trinity will face off against Ballard.
Friday, Oct. 4: Scott County 49, Anderson County 6
The Cardinals of Scott County rolled into Anderson County and decimated the Bearcats 49-6.
Nemo Wilson and Will Rhody led the charge for the Cardinals while the defense shut down the Bearcats who, despite only being able to log six points, had 234 yards of total offense.
Anderson County would not find the back of the endzone until late in the fourth quarter.
Up next, Scott County will look ahead to a date with South Oldham, fresh off its Woodford County win. Anderson County will look ahead to Collins after a bye week.
Friday, Oct. 4: Pulaski County 24, Madison Central 28
William Blair’s Indians continued to roll in their 2024 campaign, improving to 5-1 with the lone blemish still being the loss to Scott County.
As for the Pulaski County Maroons, they came up short one week after a confidence-building 49-7 win over South Laurel.
Pulaski County got on the board early, but senior running back Bryant Mathis was too much to handle.
The Indians will look ahead to a home date with Frederick Douglass, fresh off its loss to Louisville Male, while the Maroons will face off against North Laurel at home.
Friday, Oct. 4: Bourbon County 6, Sayre 56
Chad Pennington and the Sayre Spartans remained perfect on the season, easily routing Bourbon County at home.
Dayton commit Luke Pennington had himself a day, following in the footsteps of his father and his brother, Marshall quarterback Cole Pennington.
The Spartan offense has been electric all season, never scoring less than 26 and rarely scoring less than 42, while the defense has been stout, conceding points in just two games this season.
The 6-0 Spartans will look ahead to a road game against Berea, while Bourbon County will face off with Lexington Catholic.
Friday, Oct. 4: East Jessamine 7, Madison Southern 28
The MadSouth Eagles continued their winning streak after a disastrous 0-4 start to the season with a strong win over East Jessamine.
Southern head coach Mark Payne and his unit put together a strong defensive effort to limit the chances of the Jaguars to earn the first district win of the season.
The Eagles have won three straight after suffering early losses to Great Crossing, Tates Creek, Madison Central and Wayne County.
Up next, Southern will hit the road to face Montgomery County while the Jaguars of East Jessamine will have a home rivalry matchup with West Jessamine after a bye week.
