Jordan Obi announced on May 2 that she would be transferring out of Penn and committing to the Kentucky Wildcats for her fifth season via social media.
The addition of an experienced guard, especially one who averaged 14.8 points and 7.7 rebounds in her prior season, was huge in the rebuilding process for the Wildcats.
Unfortunately, during a summer workout, Obi suffered a lower leg injury and was sidelined indefinitely for the 2024-25 season.
Despite the setback, she spoke on her mental toughness after suffering the injury, sitting in a boot earlier this year.
“It’s uncharted territory for me,” Obi said. “I’m rehabbing, trying not to think too much into the future, and taking everything day by day.”
Choosing to leave Penn after four seasons was a big change and Obi had high aspirations for herself when making the switch.
“Obviously, choosing to come here like this is not what I expected for myself,” she said. “I’ve never gone through an injury before, this is the first one.”
Luckily for her, with the NCAA rule change in 2023 for injury insurance options for student-athletes, Obi will have the option to return next season if she wishes to take it.
”I’m still in a cast,” Obi said. “I know a little more, but as of right now, I have no clue.”
Despite her injury, she’s still getting the most of her new home in Kentucky.
“I really enjoy my time here,” she said. “I really enjoy hanging out with (the team), however it ends up.”
Kentucky fans — with newfound levels of excitement for the upcoming 2024-25 season — are sure to look to take in Obi with open arms if she chooses to continue her collegiate career with the Wildcats next year.
