No.12 Kentucky volleyball picked up its first win in SEC play as it defeated No. 15 Florida 3-1 on Sunday.
It was a highly anticipated match as one of the two teams has earned a share of the SEC title every year since 2016.
Florida got off to a hot start early, jumping on the Cats 6-2. Despite that, Kentucky bounced back, quickly taking the lead 15-12 at the media timeout.
Kentucky pulled away after the media timeout, winning the set 25-19. Kentucky was strong offensively, hitting at a .406 clip in the first set.
In the second set, it was the Cats who jumped out to an early lead with a 4-0 advantage after four straight errors by the Gators. Florida answered back, going on a 8-1 run and taking the lead 11-9.
Kentucky ultimately ended the set on a 12-5 run and won the set 25-20.
The story of the second set was Kentucky’s defense as Florida hit at a .000 clip, which led to the Cats winning the second set.
Set three was back-and-forth for a while until Florida went on a 5-1 run, taking the lead 14-9. The Gators continued to dominate the third set, eventually winning 25-20.
Kentucky, looking to avoid its third reverse sweep of the season, went into the media timeout in set four down 15-12. Then, after the timeout, Kentucky came out hot, going on a 5-1 run to take the lead 17-16.
No team would have a lead of more than two for the rest of the set and, after going back-and-forth, a DeLeye ace won the set for Kentucky 30-28.
DeLeye was a bright spot for the Cats again, having 24 kills on a .370 clip. Brooke Bultema was also important in the win, having 13 kills on a team-high .524 clip.
Star senior Emma Grome also had a double-double herself, logging 46 assists while adding 11 digs.
Kentucky will be back in action Wednesday against Oklahoma at 8 p.m. ET. The contest, which will take place inside Historic Memorial Coliseum, is set to air live on the SEC Network.
