Kentucky football kicker Alex Raynor continued an excellent start to the year with a stellar performance against Ohio, going 2-2 on field goals with a 34-yard long while also going 5-5 on PAT attempts.
In the game, Raynor made history for Kentucky, going 12 field goal attempts without a miss.
Raynor has yet to miss a kick through four games, making 100% of his nine field goal attempts, three of them being from 50 yards out or further.
Head coach Mark Stoops acknowledged the importance of Raynor’s accuracy post game and highlighted his streak of nine straight field goals.
He also spoke about sending Raynor out for a 56-yard attempt in the second quarter before calling a timeout and sending quarterback Brock Vandagriff back on the field.
“I guess I made one good decision today when I went for it on fourth and we end up going down there and scoring that touchdown,” Stoops said. “Instead of putting all that pressure on him (Raynor), let him keep that streak going, you know.”
Raynor has piled up 36 of Kentucky’s 90 points on the season and 114 points in his career in blue and white.
Despite that, as reliable as Raynor has been so far this season, offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan does not want to make a habit out of relying on his kicker’s leg.
“He’s been tremendous,” Hamdan said. “But, look, you got to be aggressive, and you guys know that you got to take your shots when it’s time to take your shots. But obviously a huge blessing the way we kick and punt here.”
That mindset is one that was put on display when Kentucky pulled Raynor to go for it on fourth-and-seven and is likely necessary for some of the opponents the Cat’s have on their schedule.
The kicker is currently on pace for an average of nine points per game, one more than a season ago.
Raynor will attempt to continue his streak this Saturday, Sept. 28, against the No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels with kickoff scheduled for Noon ET. And will air live on ABC.
